The three brackets
Which one are you?
Rich is not one thing. It is at least three, and the distance between them is larger than the distance between the bottom one and everybody else. Read honestly, pick the one that is yours, and pay accordingly.
We do not check anybody. These descriptions say who a tier is for. They are not a claim about anyone already listed.
Aspiring
Are you comfortable, or are you rich?
This is the bracket nobody writes an article about, because it does not photograph well. There is no jet. There is a house, and the house is genuinely nice, and there are eleven years left on it.
What separates this bracket from the one below it is not a number, it is a category of worry that has gone quiet. The car was chosen for how long it will last rather than what it costs to run. A boiler failing in February is annoying rather than serious. The supermarket is not a place where arithmetic happens.
Most people who would be described as rich by their own neighbours are here, and they are further up the distribution than they think. Being in the top few percent of earners almost anywhere in the world looks, from the inside, like a paid-off car and a holiday booked in advance. It rarely looks like the photographs.
If you have ever corrected somebody who called you rich by saying you are comfortable, this is your tier, and the correction was modest by roughly one bracket.
What this bracket looks like
- A car chosen for reliability, owned outright
- A house with a mortgage that has an end date you know
- A holiday planned a year ahead, and taken
- Savings that would absorb a bad year
- No monthly arithmetic at the supermarket

The bracket most people mean by the word
The line into this bracket is not a figure. It is the moment one question replaces another. Below it, the question is whether you can afford a thing. Here, the question is whether you want it. That sounds like a small change and it reorganises an entire life.
In practice it looks like a second property that is not let out, a car bought for how it feels rather than what it returns, and decisions made in an afternoon that used to take a quarter. School fees stop being a plan and become a line item. The calendar, not the bank, becomes the thing in short supply.
It is also the bracket with the most anxiety in it, which is the part the photographs never carry. There is enough to lose that losing it is imaginable, and enough visibility that everybody assumes there is more. People here compare upwards, constantly, and the comparison is always unflattering because the bracket above is designed to be.
You still look at the price. You have simply stopped letting it decide.
What this bracket looks like
- A second home you do not rent out
- A car bought for how it drives
- Decisions made in an afternoon, not a quarter
- Money that works without you watching it daily
- A holiday decided on last week
If somebody else manages the structure your money sits in, you are past this bracket.

Where wealth stops being an amount
At the top bracket money stops being a quantity you hold and becomes a structure you maintain. There are entities. There are people whose job is the money. The question is no longer what you can buy, it is what the arrangement is costing to keep standing.
The assets change character. A house becomes a property with staff and a schedule. A holding becomes a position with tax consequences in two countries. A jet is not a purchase, it is a fixed cost with a crew attached, which is why so many of them are shared and why the people who do not share theirs mention it.
It is also the only bracket where the spending stops being visible. Below this, wealth is displayed because displaying it is how it is confirmed. Here it is frequently the opposite: the clothes get plainer, the car gets duller, and the actual money is in things nobody photographs.
Everyone in this bracket will tell you they are not in this bracket. As far as we can tell, that is the defining feature of it.
What this bracket looks like
- Assets that employ other people
- A house with staff and a schedule
- A jet you do not share, or the option not to
- Money held through structures rather than accounts
- Purchases made without checking the price
